Dear  Members and Friends of North Brunswick Humane Association,
Recently,  the North Brunswick Humane Association proposed legislation to North Brunswick’s  mayor and town council to adopt an ordinance banning pet stores that  specifically sell puppies and kittens.
To  their credit, Mayor Womack and the entire council developed a comprehensive set  of ordinances, covering this issue. (Separate ordinances for cats and  dogs). The  vote was held this week, and the measure passed  unanimously.
In  accordance with the rules governing the adoption of ordinances to become law,  they will be published in the Thursday, Oct. 24th edition of The Home  News, and will automatically become law, 20 days from  then. We  can be very proud of ourselves, our township and our mayor and town council for  taking a stand against  the proliferation of puppy mills and kitten factories, since the hope is that by  drying up the opportunity for easy demand (i.e. the stores), we can, as a “humane” society, get rid of the horrendous conditions that the “mills” and “factories”  contribute  to.
As  it stands now, North Brunswick is only the 7th township in the entire  state of New Jersey to have this legislation, and the first in Middlesex  County. The  hope is for the movement to gain momentum and continue on to go county and  statewide, and beyond.  There are  many municipalities that are considering this type of ordinance, and we can be a  good example of what can be done.  New York is considering it, and it was recently adopted in Los Angeles  County, so North Brunswick is certainly in good company.I  think it would be a very nice idea to let our local government know how much we  appreciate and approve of what they have accomplished.  Most politicians only get feedback when  things go wrong.  When something  like this goes right, it should also be deserving of  recognition.
In  light of this, we would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes and  contact Mayor Womack and the council members to let them know that their efforts  are appreciated.  It would certainly  go a long way towards future interactions. You  can direct your emails to Janice Larkin (Jlarkin@northbrunswicknj.gov), Mayor  Womack’s Confidential Secretary and she will in turn forward to the mayor.  Additionally, please address your emails  also to the General Council members and ask her to direct them accordingly.  If you’d like to personalize them, the  Council members are:
